Fix WhatsApp Export Not Working

WhatsApp's chat export feature is reliable in most cases, but a handful of common issues can leave you with a missing menu option, a stalled progress spinner, or a file that looks empty when you open it. This guide walks through the six most frequently reported problems, what causes each one, and the quickest way to resolve it.

Quick Checklist Before Troubleshooting

Before working through the individual fixes, run through this short checklist. Many export problems are resolved by one of these three steps alone, without any further investigation required.

• Update WhatsApp - make sure you are running the latest version from the App Store or Google Play, as export bugs are frequently fixed in app updates
• Check available storage - WhatsApp writes the export file to your device; if you have less than a few hundred megabytes free, the export may fail silently
• Use the correct menu path - the location of 'Export Chat' differs between iOS and Android and is a common source of confusion

Fix 1: Export Chat Option Not Visible on iPhone

On iOS, the Export Chat option is not in the three-dot or settings menu inside the chat. Instead, you need to open the chat, tap the contact name or group name at the very top of the screen to open the info page, and then scroll down until you see 'Export Chat'. This trips up a large number of iPhone users who look in the wrong place and conclude the feature is missing.

If you are in a group chat, tap the group name at the top to open the group info screen, then scroll down past the list of participants until you reach the Export Chat option. On individual chats, tapping the contact name opens the contact info screen where the same option appears near the bottom.

Fix 2: Export Chat Option Not Visible on Android

On Android, Export Chat is accessed from inside the open chat. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the top-right corner, tap 'More', and you should see 'Export Chat' in the submenu. If the option is absent, the most likely explanation is that your version of WhatsApp is out of date - open Google Play, search for WhatsApp, and install any available update.

Some older Android devices running heavily customised versions of the operating system occasionally experience a different issue: the Export Chat option appears but tapping it does nothing. If that happens, restarting WhatsApp (force-close and reopen) and trying again usually resolves it.

Fix 3: Export Is Stuck or Taking Forever

A large chat with years of messages and embedded media can take anywhere from five to twenty minutes to package into a ZIP file, depending on your device's processing speed and available storage. If the progress indicator has been spinning for less than twenty minutes, the most useful thing you can do is wait - closing WhatsApp mid-export will cancel the process and you will need to start again.

If the export genuinely appears frozen - no progress for more than twenty minutes, or the app becomes unresponsive - cancel the export and try again selecting 'Without Media'. A text-only export typically completes in under a minute regardless of chat length, and WaChat to PDF can produce a complete, properly formatted PDF from a text-only export.

Fix 4: Exported File Is Empty or Very Small

If the ZIP or text file you receive is only a few kilobytes, open it in a plain text editor before assuming it is corrupt. A very small file usually means the chat contained few or no text messages - for example, a group that communicated almost entirely through photos or voice notes will produce a near-empty text export because the media files themselves are not included in a 'Without Media' export.

Occasionally, a permissions or write-access issue on the device will cause WhatsApp to create the export file but fail to write any content into it. In that case, clearing WhatsApp's storage cache in your device settings (Settings → Apps → WhatsApp → Storage → Clear Cache on Android) and retrying the export often resolves the problem.

Fix 5: WhatsApp Exported a .txt Instead of a .zip

On some iOS versions, choosing 'Without Media' produces a plain .txt file rather than a .zip archive. This is normal WhatsApp behaviour - when there are no media files to package, the app skips the ZIP container and delivers the chat log directly as a text file. The contents are identical to what would be inside a ZIP.

WaChat to PDF accepts both .zip and .txt formats, so a .txt export will convert just as reliably as a .zip. Simply upload the .txt file at the upload page and the conversion will proceed normally.

Fix 6: The ZIP Exported But Can't Be Parsed

In rare cases, a ZIP file that appears complete and opens correctly on your device cannot be parsed by the conversion tool. This is usually caused by an unusual character encoding in the chat - for example, a conversation that mixed languages using non-Latin scripts can occasionally produce a file that older parser versions struggle with. The most reliable workaround is to use WhatsApp's date-range filter to export a shorter section of the chat, which reduces the chance of hitting an edge case.
