How to Export a WhatsApp Group Chat

Group chats export differently from one-on-one conversations. Here's how to export a WhatsApp group chat on iOS and Android, and what to watch out for.

Exporting a WhatsApp group chat follows the same basic process as exporting a one-on-one chat, but there are important differences in what the export contains and how it behaves. Group chats can involve dozens or hundreds of participants, produce significantly larger files, and include system events that do not appear in individual conversations. This guide walks you through the export steps on both iOS and Android and explains what to expect from the output.

Step-by-Step on iPhone (iOS)

  1. Open WhatsApp and tap the group chat you want to export.
  2. Tap the group name or the group icon at the very top of the conversation screen to open Group Info.
  3. Scroll down past the media grid, participants list, and shared files until you see Export Chat.
  4. Tap Export Chat. WhatsApp will ask whether to include media or not.
  5. Select Include Media for a full archive with photos and audio, or Without Media for text only.
  6. The iOS share sheet appears. Tap Save to Files to save the ZIP to your iCloud Drive or local storage, or choose another destination such as Mail or Google Drive.

On iPhone, if the group has a large number of participants or a long message history, WhatsApp may take 30–60 seconds to prepare the export before the share sheet appears. Keep the screen on and do not navigate away from WhatsApp during this time.

Step-by-Step on Android

  1. Open WhatsApp and open the group conversation.
  2. Tap the three-dot menu icon in the upper-right corner of the conversation.
  3. Tap More from the dropdown menu.
  4. Tap Export Chat.
  5. Choose Include Media or Without Media.
  6. The Android share sheet opens. Save the file to Google Drive, your device Downloads folder, or another app. The file will be named using the group name and the current date.

On some Android devices, particularly Samsung running One UI, the menu path may show as Chat Settings rather than More. If Export Chat does not appear in the first dropdown, look one level deeper in the chat settings sub-menu.

Group Chat Export vs 1:1 Export - Key Differences

Group exports differ from individual conversation exports in four main ways. Understanding these differences helps you interpret the export correctly when converting it to PDF.

  • Sender attribution: Every message in a group export is prefixed with the sender's saved name or phone number. In a 1:1 export, only the other person's name appears - your own messages are attributed to 'You' or omitted from the sender field depending on your WhatsApp version.
  • Admin and system messages: Group exports include events such as participants joining or leaving, group name changes, and admin permission changes. These appear as plain lines in _chat.txt without a sender prefix.
  • Group events: Calls, polls, and reactions generate their own system entries in the transcript. Reactions are typically logged as reaction update events on a separate line rather than being attached inline to the original message.
  • File size: A busy group chat with media sharing can produce a ZIP file that is many gigabytes. Budget storage space accordingly, and consider exporting without media first to assess the text volume before committing to a full media export.

Large Group Chats - What to Expect

Group chats with hundreds of members or years of history can become very large exports. WhatsApp does not impose a hard message limit on exports, but it does cap the number of media files at 10,000 most recent items. If your group has exchanged more than 10,000 photos and videos, only the most recent 10,000 media files will be included in the ZIP even though the text references for all of them remain in _chat.txt.

Large exports can also take a long time to process on both the export side and the conversion side. If you are converting a group chat with tens of thousands of messages to PDF, expect the conversion to take longer than a small personal chat. The pro tier of WaChat to PDF handles these large exports server-side using a dedicated pipeline designed for volume, while the free tier processes the file in your browser.

If WhatsApp crashes or shows an error during a large group export, try exporting without media first. The text-only export is far faster and more reliable on older devices. You can always re-export with media once you have confirmed the text export works correctly.

Converting a Group Chat to PDF

Once you have the ZIP file, converting a group chat to PDF works the same way as any other export. Upload the file to WaChat to PDF and the converter will detect all senders automatically, assign consistent styling per participant, and render the full conversation with timestamps and media embedded inline. Multi-sender group chats are fully supported - there is no limit on the number of distinct participants.

For legal submissions involving a group chat, the pro tier adds features that are particularly useful: redaction of phone numbers and personal details, Bates numbering for page-level citation, and a SHA-256 integrity hash that confirms the PDF has not been altered since it was generated.
